Labor Day began as a tribute to the American worker – a holiday to honor their significant contributions and remember their mistreatment. Today we recognize the vital work organized labor unions have done:
- We appreciate the 40-hour work week and children playing and learning in school instead of working
- Collective bargaining
- Safe work environments, including freedom from harassment and discrimination
- Raising minimum wage
- Paid family leave
Today, remember these and more are the result of decades of work from organized labor unions. Their activism and support from the Democratic party have secured labor laws for all workers. Labor unions demonstrate that we are stronger together than as individuals and that supporting and protecting labor benefits every aspect of our society.
We have many DTC members in unions and some were able to attend the annual Connecticut AFL-CIO Labor Day Breakfast on Friday. They were celebrated by the full constitutional slate of Democratic statewide candidates, along with federal and state senators and representatives. In that spirit, our September 15 meeting will honor and highlight the efforts of our union members. 7 PM at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 275 Huntington Rd.
