Stratford Democrats remember Virginia Chittem

Virginia M. Chittem, age 70 of Stratford, died peacefully at home on November 17, 2009. She was the wife of the late Alfred G. Chittem and daughter of the late Matthew and Mary Pistey. She had been a Stratford resident for 43 years. Mrs. Chittem was a retired teacher and had taught fifth grade at Franklin School for 25 years. She received her masters degree and sixth year certificate from Southern Connecticut State University. Mrs. Chittem was an active member of Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church. She had been very involved in local politics as a member of Stratford's Democratic Town Committee and had also run for a state senate seat in the early 1980s. Mrs. Chittem enjoyed reading, bowling and traveling. She is survived by three beloved children and their spouses, Wendy and David Hoffman of Monroe, Jeffrey and Cheryl Chittem of Stratford and Allison and David Hartnett of Miami, Fla.; six cherished grandchildren who loved and adored her, Jonathan and Colby Hoffman, Jake and McKenzy Chittem and Alexander and Katelynn Hartnett. She will also be missed by several cousins and her many dear friends. Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford. Panikhida service will be at 7:30 p.m. Private funeral service and interment in St. Michael Cemetery.
